From the Mat to the Marketplace: A Division I Athlete’s Entrepreneurial Journey
When Michael Markulin arrived at Cleveland State University, he had a clear plan: major in marketing, minor in entrepreneurship, pursue a pre-law focus—and compete as a Division I wrestler. What he did not fully anticipate was how interconnected those experiences would ultimately become.
Balancing Division I athletics with academics required discipline, focus, and exceptional time management. Competing at the highest collegiate level while working toward his degree sharpened skills that would extend far beyond the wrestling mat. When multiple shoulder surgeries brought his athletic career to an unexpected end, Michael leaned on the resilience and work ethic he had developed through sport. The perseverance and mental toughness that once fueled his performance in competition became the foundation for how he approached challenges in the classroom and in business.
Michael chose to minor in entrepreneurship to gain practical, real-world experience. Through the Weston Ideation Lab, he developed hands-on skills in communication, market research, and customer discovery. More importantly, he cultivated a mindset centered on critical thinking, adaptability, and creative problem-solving. The Lab challenged him to test assumptions, refine ideas, and approach challenges with confidence—skills that will serve him well in any professional path.
Driven by a desire to help others pursue their dreams, Michael became actively involved in the Weston Ideation Lab community. Observing entrepreneurs work daily to turn ideas into viable ventures strengthened his interest in eventually attending law school, where he hopes to support entrepreneurs on the legal side of launching and scaling successful businesses.
With encouragement from Lynn Buchinsky and the Weston team, Michael stepped outside his comfort zone and entered a startup pitch competition using a class project as his concept. The experience proved transformative. It strengthened his confidence, expanded his professional network, and accelerated his personal and professional growth. Through the competition and his broader involvement in the CSU and Weston communities, he built meaningful relationships that he expects will last a lifetime.
Michael encourages fellow students—regardless of their intended career path—to get involved with the Weston Ideation Lab. The skills developed and connections formed extend far beyond entrepreneurship alone. For Michael, the discipline cultivated in athletics became the catalyst for growth in business and innovation, proving that setbacks can often become the starting point for new and rewarding journeys.
