IS Applied Learning Experience for Employers

EMPLOYERS want to hire the candidate who has both a strong education and valuable work experience.

You want a candidate who has both the strong education and work experience in their desired field. The Information Systems (IS) Applied Learning Experience will help students from the Monte Ahuja College of Business at Cleveland State University achieve their goals of a career in Information Systems or Business Analytics.

The IS Applied Learning experience allows students to gain relevant work experience in their chosen field. They are able to select their area of specialization as well as the length of time they are in the workforce. This allows employers the opportunity to select students that are in their junior and senior year and are ready to join the workforce.  

Student Qualifications
  • Completed all courses through the freshman yearcceptance into the program.
  • Enrolled as a full-time student in the BS-IS or BBA-BA program
  • Minimum 2.5 GPA, in good academic standing
  • Enrolled in, or have completed, IST 211
  • Interested in positions such as:
    • Application development and support
    • Business analytics
    • Cybersecurity
    • Data and business intelligence
    • Data analyst
    • Data visualization analysts
    • Databases
    • Help desk
    • Market research analysts
    • Project management
Employers Responsibilities
  • Provide meaningful, challenging work assignments, closely related to the student’s chosen IS or Business Analytics  field.
  • If possible, begin planning your IS Applied Learning Experience needs a minimum of one-year in advance. The IS Applied Learning  coordinator can provide numbers of available students and resumes to assist in your planning.
  • Submit a detailed position description to the IS Co-Op coordinator. Make offers during the semester prior to the student’s availability to begin the assignment (or earlier).
  • Provide full-time employment for the duration of the work session
  • Pay a wage commensurate with experience. While the employer makes the hiring and salary decision, the IS Applied Learning Experience coordinator can provide current salary information based upon industry best practices, experience, and academic classification. Resumes of available students who meet the position qualifications will be made available and on-campus interviewing may be arranged.
  • Maintain communication with the IS Co-Op coordinator regarding scheduled interviews, pending offers and job acceptances.
  • Mentor, supervise and formally evaluate the student to enhance their learning and professional development.

Flexible Session lengths and times

Any full-time session length beyond 8 weeks

  • 8 – 10 weeks (typically the summer semester)
  • 15 weeks (could be fall or spring semester)
  • 6 months (January through June OR July through December)
  • Custom sessions starting and ending when desired

Two Enrollment Periods
  • 3rd week of August for positions starting any time from January through December
  • 3rd week of January for positions starting any time from May through December
