Grant Writing Best Practices

Course Description:

A professional-level course on best practices in planning, researching and managing the grant writing and bid proposal process. Topics include ethics in the field, how to demonstrate innovative thinking and plan for sustainability, developing and maintaining strong working relationships with grant makers, managing contractors, complex partnerships and budgets. Students will learn how to write, review and revise bid proposals and contracts, what to do if a grant or contract is not awarded, and behind-the-scenes processes and decisions that may determine acceptance or denial.

Prerequisite:

Students must complete Introduction to Grant Writing and Grant Proposal Development prior to enrolling in this course. Completion of Introduction to Grant Writing and Grant Proposal Development can be done within 1 year prior to registering for this course.

Who Should Attend:

This course is for anyone interested in earning the Grant Writing Certificate including staff, administrators, volunteers, board members and consultants at nonprofit organizations, public or private educational institutions and government agencies. For-profit businesses seeking grants to fund research or training are welcome as are individual grant seekers such as artists, filmmakers or journalists.

Real-World Application:

Deploying systematic methods and strategies to plan, secure and integrate grants into a dynamic funding portfolio is essential for professionals in many industries, including government agencies, nonprofit organizations, private and public education, foundations and research. This course will covers best practices that are critical to successfully writing and managing grants, contracts and bid proposals.

Course Objectives:

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Possess a better understanding of the proposal development and review process.
  • Write and award contracts and bids.
  • Understand complex budgeting and partnerships.
  • Know best practices in the field of grant writing.
